Valve’s Steam data for December shows huge drop in Linux gaming market share

VALVE --

Valve just released their Steam Survey numbers for December 2020 and it’s a huge disappointment for Linux gamers if the numbers are really accurate.

According to figures released by Valve, the Linux market share on Steam was only 0.57%, down 0.33% from the previous month. Figures from December 2020 show Windows grew just over 1.6% while macOS lost 1.31% market share to 2.14%. These numbers are a huge upheaval for Linux and macOS games.

It’s possible that those numbers are a bit off, as we’ve seen a number of times in the past where Valve later revises their numbers based on varying explanations. But it is also possible that there has indeed been a huge increase in the number of Windows gamers during the holidays and various game sales etc. There are also some who continue to doubt Valve’s Steam Survey techniques, among other concerns.

But in any case, being previously at 0.9% and hoping to cross the 1.0% threshold for Steam Linux games soon, at this point the numbers are a disappointment for non-Windows gamers.

So at least from the Steam survey results as released now, the market share for games on Linux has fallen back to 0.57% after seeing a steady increase since the introduction of Steam Play (Proton) for allow many more games on Linux.
