It’s comfort food – in a cone.
Limited-edition macaroni and cheese ice cream will hit freezers nationwide this week, Brooklyn-based ice cream maker Van Leeuwen and Kraft Heinz announced Tuesday.
The frozen cheese treat will go on sale for $ 12 a pint at 11 a.m. ET Wednesday to mark National Macaroni and Cheese Day, the companies said.
It will be available for purchase at Van Leeuwen stores across the country as well as online while supplies last.
The companies have described ice cream as a “scoop of cool, creamy ice cream that brings that heartwarming, nostalgic feeling of a hot bowl of Kraft Mac and Cheese.”
“We know there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That’s why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese we’ve all grown up with, ”said Emily Violett, Senior Associate Brand Manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.
“As big Van Leeuwen fans we knew they would be the perfect partner to create this ice cream with us. Not only does it taste delicious, it’s also made with high quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives or colors, just like our Kraft Mac and Cheese, ”added Violett.
Brothers Pete and Ben Van Leeuwen and Laura O’Neill founded Van Leeuwen in 2008, operating from a yellow truck on the streets of New York.
The idea was to use premium, fair-trade ingredients, many of which are organic, to create their own artisanal flavors, including Honeycomb, Marionberry Cheesecake, Vegan Earl Gray Tea, and now Kraft Mac & Cheese.
The company now has 23 “scoop shops” in New York, Houston and Los Angeles and sells pints in grocery stores across the country.
