The Cubs pitchers and catchers are fully underway at Mesa, starting their progresses in the reliever pen and preparing for the game’s initial action in March.
With the media restrictions this year due to the pandemic, I suspect our visuals are going to be limited for a while. But the Cubs sent some today, and my dopamine receptors will take it like this:

David Ross is understandably happy to have Jake Arrieta at home:

Adbert Alzolay entering with Arrieta? Yes, you like to see this:

The extremely diverse pitch mix is actually a pretty strong overlap for these two: two seams, four seams, changeup, curve, slider. This is what Arrieta launched for a long time, and this is what Alzolay launched last year. So for both of them, spending time together is potentially particularly useful, and that’s obviously a small part of why you’re targeting a guy like Arrieta in free agency in the first place. Maybe he’ll add a clipping layer on Alzolay’s slider… (Wandering note, if you missed it: Alzolay will indeed have an additional option this season.)
We have to (?) See Yu Darvish in his new duds today, and here is Jon Lester in his:

At least it’s from behind and a bit from a distance? It doesn’t seem so definitive yet for this reason. Yeah, I’m a nutcase.
Another look at Darvish, as well as Victor Caratini, in their new gear:

Good reminder here from an old friend:
I would be worried if anyone cared about the speed in the first spring pen

Sometimes when guys show up with HUGE jump speed in Spring Training, it’s worth commenting on as a curiosity (as it could mean some off-season gains and more to come; or it could mean a guy is just particularly advanced in its construction-progression, which could be a good thing or a delicate thing). But, yes, be worried about the bike in the first paddock? It would be a laughing situation.
