Vegan KitKat: Nestlé’s new chocolate bar lacks key ingredient

Nestlé is launching a non-dairy version of the popular candy bar, called KitKat V. The Swiss company is jumping on the trend for plant-based alternative foods. Nestlé promises that the new candy always has “the perfect balance between a crispy wafer and a smooth chocolate”.
KitKat V is ditching dairy milk, which is used for its regular KitKats, for a rice-based alternative in addition to its new sustainable cocoa, according to Bloomberg. The new bar will go on sale later this year in several countries at select retailers before expanding worldwide.

“Taste was a key factor when developing plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat,” Louise Barrett, head of the Nestlé Confectionery Technology Center, said in a statement. “We used our ingredient expertise, coupled with a testing and learning approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat.

Foods of plant origin extend to meat and milk. In 2019, Mars launched a line of vegan chocolate bars to appeal to eaters who want to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy products for health and environmental reasons. Other manufacturers, such as Lindt and Cadbury, have also recently launched vegan sweets.

The trend, according to Alexander von Maillot, head of confectionery at Nestlé, continues to grow.

“There is a quiet food revolution going on that is changing the way people eat. We want to be at the forefront of that, championing the discovery of plant-based foods and drinks,” he said. he said in the press release.
