A few weeks ago, many regulars at the Cannes Film Festival did not know if they would make the trip. For some, it was hard to believe that the overcrowded and still chaotic media event could occur in these times of a pandemic. But here we are, as we approach the first weekend of Cannes 2021, and it turns out there is plenty to write home about.

In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, fresh out of a fancy dinner party at the festival, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson sit in their Cannes apartment to discuss their experiences in the field. They debate some of the most high-profile entries so far, including documentaries on Val Kilmer and the Velvet Underground as well as “Cow,” Andrea Arnold’s experimental effort. They also address the relative calm of the market, why it doesn’t seem to bother anyone doing business at the festival, and then end by anticipating their expectations for next week.
