25-07-18.-A Dutch medical study was paralyzed after the death of 11 newborns. The trial sought to enhance the growth of the unborn child in women with undeveloped placentas through the drug Sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra, reports the portal of science and health Quo.
This pill is used to dilate blood vessels promoting male erection or as a control of blood pressure. Experts thought this would also enhance placental growth. However, they did not expect that one of the side effects would affect the blood vessels in the lungs of newborns, causing them excessive pressure that could lead to death.
The study began in 2015 with 183 women in pregnancy status. 93 took Viagra and 90 a placebo. 17 babies born in the first group had lung problems, 11 of which died. Only 3 of the second had complications. Although experts say that a thorough investigation still needs to be carried out, there is concern that there are more lives in danger.
