The Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday approved a resolution asking the Government of Nicaragua's President, Daniel Ortega to accept the proposal made by the Catholic Church from to advance until March 2019 the elections scheduled for 2021 .
The initiative, promoted by seven countries (Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and USA) and supported by Mexico, urges the Nicaraguan executive in "support a jointly agreed electoral calendar in the context of the process of national dialogue" according to the text.
Bishops' Conference of Nicaragua Mediator and witness of this national dialogue, asked on June 7 in Ortega to advance the elections to March 31, 2019; but, on July 7, the president rejected this request, considering that there would be "the time for elections as required by law."
The resolution was approved with the vote in favor of 21 of the 34 countries that are active members of the OAS while Nicaragua Venezuela and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines voted against and seven abstentions, as well as three absentees, including Bolivia.
It took 18 votes to approve the resolution, an instrument that establishes the continent's criterion of legality over the Nicaraguan crisis which killed more than 350 people in three months.
In the text, the OAS reiterates its "strong condemnation and grave concern" for acts of violence perpetrated by police and paramilitaries in Nicaragua and demands the "dismantling of vigilance groups", acting with the consent of the executive, s The humanitarian groups egún.
The initiative does not designate Ortega for violence, but urges his government to participate "actively and in good faith" in the national dialogue, mediated by the Catholic Church.
