The first giant (Ingentia prima), Argentine paleontologists have named a new species of herbivorous dinosaur that has shaken the paradigm of how these have become the largest animals They inhabited the Earth.
Ingentia prima was a dinosaur who lived in present-day Argentina during the late Triassic, more than 200 million years ago. His skeleton, recently discovered by paleontologists at the National University of San Juan, Argentina, reveals that some species have reached gigantism 30 million years earlier than it had been thought for decades .
Prosauropods were small, bipedal dinosaurs weighing less than seven tons. This group evolved towards the sauropods, giants who developed the cuadrupedismo to support their weight, ten times larger than that of their predecessors. Ingentia prima was one of the first examples of this group. Although, with its ten tons, it is not ranked among the largest animals on Earth, its growth type and respiratory system reveal that there was an evolutionary path to gigantism different from what was known . Until now, it was believed that gigantism appeared in the Jurassic period.
