A bronze statue, 2.5 meters high and weighing 300 kilograms, was stolen from its pedestal on Avenida Andrés Bello in the city of Merida. The information was published by the Venezuela Monuments Associations, through its Twitter account.
The sculpture was made by Fray Juan Ramos de Lora, a Franciscan missionary and first bishop of the cities of Merida and Maracaibo, as well as founder of the University of the Andes, the second most famous university in the country after the Central University of Venezuela
The work could have been stolen by thugs, motivated by the value of the material with which it was made. As it was known, this is not the first flight of sculptures in the country. For about a year has been increasing this type of crime that ends the cultural and religious heritage of the nation.
The statue of the bishop was declared Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Libertador (2004), Cultural Interest of the Nation (2007), and was inaugurated on June 24, 1972 in the Fray Park Juan Ramos de Lora .
On July 4 was also stolen the bust of the writer and poet Andrés Eloy Blanco, of the Plaza that bears his name in the city of Cumaná, in the state of Sucre, at 15 meters of the government. Another bronze bust was also that of Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, who was located on Pichincha Square in the capital Sucrense.
