A study published in Advanced Materials states that the teeth of whales can withstand without interrupting a lifetime, forces generated by the flow of water and their prey. This discovery paves the way for the development of advanced engineering materials, according to the authors.

Although little studied, it is known that whalebeards are made of a strong and flexible material. It was popular to use corsets from the 11th century to the 20th century and was used in basketry in Alaska.

Research, led by Wang Bin of the Shenzhen Advanced Technology Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, showed that the nanoscale structure of intermediate filaments and mineral crystals of the beard, embedded in an amorphous matrix, increases its rigidity and strength.

These barbs consist of a series of parallel plates hanging from the palate on both sides of the mouth that allow efficient feeding of large amounts of small zooplankton. This filtering mechanism allowed the mysatus to evolve to become the largest living being on the planet. They are formed mainly of mineralized keratin material.
