The government has approved the sale of a revolutionary drug for the treatment of several types of cancer, which focuses on genetic mutations in tumors instead of localization of the affected organ, as is normally done .
According to NBC News reports, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has endorsed the drug called Larotrectibib, which attacks the genetic cause of the disease.
"We have shown that it works in all types of cancer, provided that it has a specific mutation in a gene called TRK," said Dr. David Hyman of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who led the project .
The new drug works in 17 types of cancer, including the lung, skin, neck and thyroid.
The drug comes in a pill under the Vitrakvi brand and can be taken twice a day.
Professionals say the drug can be used to treat patients who have exhausted their options.
