Core endorestiform, the new region of the brain that they have just discovered

The human brain remains a mystery to the scientific community, to the point that it has just discovered a new region hitherto unknown. This is the so-called endorestiform core. We explain where you are and what your role is.

The human body does not stop surprising: a few months after the discovery of a new ligament at the ankle, scientists have discovered a new region in the brain unknown until now.

They named it as the endo-terminal kernel and could be related to the beautiful movements. The first suspicions about its existence appeared 30 years ago, but this is not the case until now. George Paxinos, with his team at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), confirmed it.

It is located inside the lower cerebellar peduncle, the part of the brain in contact with the spine, an area responsible for receiving sensory and motor information from the body to adjust our posture, balance and movements.

Paxinos compared the inferior cerebellar peduncle to a river that carries information from the spine to the cerebellum, the endorestiform core being a group of neurons comparable to an island in this river of information. However, it is still early to confirm its function with certainty.

However, being linked to fine motor skills, this would be a particularly relevant discovery, not only because it was the brain – which remains a mystery to scientists – but also its implications.

To begin, this new region of the brain it is perhaps what distinguishes us from other species, as well as the size of our brain. "The region is intriguing because it seems to be absent in the rhesus macaque and the other animals we have studied."Said Paxinos.

The most widespread and equivocal myths about the human brain

But not only that, being a domain that regulates the end engine too could be the key to cure neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease or the motor neuron.

Paxinos has been producing atlases of the human brain for years, essential for researchers studying neurological or psychiatric diseases. They are considered the most accurate representations of brain structure and are also frequently used in neurosurgery.
