The president of Huawei Technologies said on Sunday that he had taken note of Donald Trump's message about the possibility of allowing competition in the telecommunications sector and that he was right because the United States had need 5G technology.

Guo Ping also said that Huawei had been confronted with cyber security problems led by a major power that he had not identified.

The United States, said Guo, do not represent the whole world and, as a result, Huawei could continue to succeed without the United States.

On the risk that Trump is issuing a decree banning Huawei from operating in the United States, he said: "This is not necessary and should not be done". He added that a move in this direction would hurt Huawei's small US customer base.

Guo said the world needed a clear and unified cybersecurity regulation that would have the role of all stakeholders, but that the policy should not solve these problems.

"We need a unified standard that must be verifiable – it should not be policy-based."
