The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that measles cases had increased by 30% in 2017 worldwide and that several countries had "prolonged and severe" germs for various reasons.
"The reappearance of measles is of great concern to us, especially in countries that have eliminated or are about to eliminate this disease," said WHO Director of Immunization and Vaccines, Martin Friede. at a press conference in Geneva.
According to the data collected, all regions of the world reported cases of measles, which reached 173,000 worldwide in 2017, compared with 132,000 the previous year.
The Americas is one of the countries with the highest number of cases, particularly in Venezuela and neighboring countries, which have hosted a large proportion of Venezuelans who have left their country in the past two years.
Africa has also experienced a rebound of cases, linked to forced displacement, conflict and poverty, situations that make areas where immunization coverage is low.

However, WHO has indicated that the relapse of measles, a highly infectious disease that can have serious consequences, occurs not only in crisis and poverty contexts, but also in industrialized countries, "with good coverage and health surveillance ".
