MADRID, January 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The researchers of CIBERONC's Tumor Progression Mechanism program in its thematic area of cancer (CIBERONC) have identified, in a work published in the journal "Oncogene", a pathway involved in the structure and therapeutic response of cancer. breast.

Specifically, in the work conducted by the group of Xosé Bustelo of the Cancer Research Foundation of the University of Salamanca, in collaboration with the group of Jesús M. Paramio, a new signaling pathway involved in the regulation was discovered. how cancer cells stick to each other in the tumor mass and key genetic factors that determine this function.

"Through this work, we have identified genetic signatures associated with this new biological process to predict with great reliability different parameters of the evolution of patients with breast cancer, such as their degree of long-term survival, their response to chemotherapy and the likelihood of developing lung metastases, "said the expert.

In fact, he continues, the diagnostic capacity of these companies is "better" than other diagnostic tools already available in the clinic, as is the case with the genetic signature known as commercial. from "MamaPrint".

"It is very important to continue in this way of working by discovering factors allowing us to diagnose and treat more effectively this type of cancer", explained Bustelo, who led this study in collaboration with the group of Jesus M. Paramio , also belonging to this program.

Funding for the work was made possible through contributions from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the Carlos III Institute (RTICC), the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the autonomous communities of Castile-Leon and Madrid and the ERDF Fund of the European Union. .
