Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was originally part of Venom: let there be carnagethe story according to director Andy Serkis. Sony has been hoping to create a Spider-Man cinematic universe for years and 2018 Venom turned out to be the starting point the studio was looking for. He announced plans for a sequel and other films featuring Spider-Man villains like Morbius and Kraven the hunter. Throughout the early stages of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, the biggest question that arose is whether or not Tom Holland’s Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will intersect or not.


Thanks to the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony to share Spider-Man, Holland’s crawler has already appeared in five MCU films. Her sixth appearance is coming soon when Spider-Man: No Path Home is hitting theaters, but there were previously rumors that it would be in Venom or more. Venom: let there be carnage is in theaters now and performing very well at the box office, and much of the hype has come from the film’s post-credits scene. It’s during Venom 2post-credits that Tom Hardy’s Venom jumps into the MCU and sees Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. This teasing of their meeting is all the movie can offer, but it could have happened in Venom: let there be carnage at one point.

Venom 2 director Andy Serkis spoke with THR into the spoiler details about his Marvel movie, and that included being asked about the final game-changing movie tease. It was during the interview that Serkis mentioned that the Venom: let there be carnage The post-credits scene was changing dramatically throughout development and production. He even revealed that there had been a point where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was supposed to appear in Venom 2 in a certain way.

[The mid-credits scene was] 100 percent moving, yeah. It couldn’t have been more moving if you had tried. Yeah sure, that was something they were talking about before I even got into the movie. There were times when he [Spider-Man] was going to be in history, potentially, and then he wasn’t. But no, we decided that we wanted to really take a look at the Venom verse first. While we were in the main shoot, we had to have inevitable discussions, but it was not until very, very late that we arrived at the precise notion of the teaser we wanted to put in it.

The reveal that Spider-Man almost appeared in Venom 2The story of is quite surprising, as it could have completely changed the direction of the film. Spider-Man wouldn’t naturally fit into the story the film tells, but there might have been an idea to have him appear in the finale to help Carnage. Of course, this would require all of Venom 2 and the franchise taking place within the MCU. The appearance of Tom Holland in Venom: let there be carnage was instead limited to being seen in an extended version of Spider-Man: Far From Homethe credits scene with J. Jonah Jameson.

Serkis doesn’t provide any explanation as to why Spider-Man doesn’t appear in Venom 2 ‘s history, but there are many factors to consider. Disney and Sony had broken off talks to continue sharing Spider-Man for Venom 2So Sony may have moved quickly to find a way to make Spider-Man part of the story. However, those plans could have been changed again once Spider-Man joined the MCU. Even though Sony wanted Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to appear in Venom 2, this might not have been possible due to the timing of Phase 4 and the Spider-Man: No Path Home. While Venom: let there be carnage ultimately failed to deliver a reunion between Spider-Man and Venom, which seems to be around the corner now.
