Verizon has reached an agreement to start selling OnePlus phones, likely as early as next year, according to a report from Android font. The indications are that the partnership is locked, although details such as whether Verizon will get an exclusive device and whether phones will support its 5G network are not yet known.
Operators do not hold the power that they once had, but that would still be a big problem for OnePlus.
Even though US carriers do not have as much power as in the past, it is still extremely important from a marketing and general visibility perspective to route phones to stores. OnePlus seems to have done very well with its initial T-Mobile partnership and its subsequent partnership with Sprint, and it would be logical for Verizon and OnePlus to be able to find a similar deal, equally beneficial to both parties.
OnePlus manufactures phones that are well below the market-leading high-end products, and operators are still looking to offer phones at various prices. There are additional overhead costs for each phone that you sell as an operator, but most of the time, offering a $ 700 OnePlus phone next to a $ 1,000 Samsung phone is a benefit. At the same time, OnePlus would gain another level of legitimacy in the eyes of the phone shopper through its availability in Verizon stores. Not to mention the value of allowing people to see and hold the phone before you buy, and to have the feeling of having an after-sales service through the carrier.
Hope from the consumer's point of view would be that Verizon simply offers the same device – such as a OnePlus 8 Pro – that would be available unlocked, but offered directly by the carrier would accompany better financing offers and promotion. But given that Verizon is in a strong position, it would not be surprising to see an exclusive model touching the carrier, even though it's as minimal as a dedicated version that simply integrates the 5G mmWave network support from Verizon.
