Verizon finally gave some details about its 5G launch this morning: it plans to deploy next generation wireless technology in 30 cities by the end of 2019. The carrier did not specify which cities would these cities be and how 5G These cities, or exactly when the launch would begin, Verizon said each launch would include a deployment of ultra-fast millimeter-wave radios.
"The speed and throughput will be totally different from the ones you've seen before," said Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon, at a meeting with investors this morning. Verizon spokespersons confirmed that the company did not yet identify the cities in which the service would be launched.
Verizon also clarified that it would work well for a standard 5G, and not for the off-brand 5G used by Verizon for its wireless home Internet service.
Otherwise, we are still waiting for Verizon's details. The company has promised to launch the 5G at the beginning of the year, but has not yet given concrete details. However, some details really should happen: Verizon is the exclusive launch partner of the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. The phone is supposed to go on sale at some point "in the first half of 2019," leaving Verizon four months or so for the first parts of its 5G network to be operational.
"It's not very far," said Vestberg about the launch of the phone. "I want it tomorrow, but it will not be tomorrow."
T-Mobile has also promised to launch 5G in 30 cities. AT & T's 5G network is already installed in 12 cities, although no one can use it. None of the operators has yet launched a 5G phone, but this should happen in the coming months.
