BAR, Vt. (WCAX) Dollar General pays $ 1.7 million to Vermont as part of a regulation under the state's Consumer Protection Act.
Attorney General T.J. Donovan says the company has repeatedly violated consumer protection laws by advertising prices on store shelves and then charging more on the register. Donovan says that there have been at least 362 violations in 22 different stores. There are a total of 36 stores in Vermont.
"The inspectors found 362 cases where the price of the shelf or label was lower than the price on the register, the problem was widespread around Vermont," he said.
Price differences ranged from two cents to six dollars. Donovan says the Vermont Food Bank will receive $ 100,000 of the settlement money.
According to Donovan, Dollar General has paid close to a quarter of a million dollars in administrative penalties in recent years, but has not corrected the problems. His office enforced the law under the Consumer Protection Act.
Dollar General officials said in a statement that they were striving to provide price accuracy. "When a price anomaly is identified, Dollar General takes quick action to remedy the situation," they said. "Although we do not necessarily endorse all the statements of the Vermont Attorney General's Office, we appreciated their constructive approach to settling this case."
