Very contagious stomach bug that spreads in the Hudson Valley

A highly contagious stomach virus is spreading at an alarming rate in the Hudson Valley.

Social media reports said there had been a "norovirus outbreak" at the Vassar Brothers medical center. A spokesman for the hospital confirmed to the Hudson Valley Post that these were related issues, but added that it should not be described as an "epidemic" and that it has not been confirmed as being a norovirus ".

John R. Nelson, Director of Public and Community Affairs at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, confirmed that he has seen a recent increase in the number of patients with gastroenteritis.

"There has been an increase in cases of gastroenteritis in the Vassar Brothers medical center, mainly through the emergency department," Nelson said in an email to Hudson Valley Post. "We follow all recommended infection control steps and, as always, put the safety of our patients first."

The New York State Department of Health is working with the hospital on what the Ministry of Health has called "an outbreak of gastrointestinal disorders."

"The New York State Department of Health has been in contact with the Vassar Brothers Medical Center about an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness occurring in the facility. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide technical assistance and advice as needed, "said Jeffrey Hammond, Information Officer, New York State Department of Health, at the Hudson Valley Post.

Many viruses can cause gastroenteritis, including rotaviruses, noroviruses, adenoviruses, sapoviruses and astroviruses, responsible for health. The infection usually causes vomiting and diarrhea.

• Wash your hands thoroughly after each washroom visit and before and after food preparation.




• People who suffer from nausea, vomiting or diarrhea should not go to school or work and should not handle food for other patients.




• Avoid drinking untreated water.




• Cook the molluscs thoroughly before eating
