WILMINGTON, Del. – Veteran diplomat and longtime Biden foreign policy adviser Antony Blinken is President-elect Joe Biden’s first choice to serve as secretary of state, multiple sources told NBC News.

A transition official said Blinken was the most likely candidate for the job but couldn’t confirm the appointment until Biden was announced.

Major government roles for Blinken include serving as Deputy National Security Advisor from 2013 to 2015 under former President Barack Obama and Deputy Secretary of State from 2015 to 2017.

NBC News previously reported that Blinken was one of the Secretary of State’s favorites.

A source familiar with planning for the transition told NBC News that the first selections from Biden’s Cabinet will be in the areas of diplomacy and national security.

New White House chief of staff Ron Klain said on Sunday that Biden would begin announcing his cabinet choices on Tuesday.

Geoff Bennett and Amanda Golden reported from Wilmington and Carol E. Lee from Washington.
