The award-winning television and radio host was one of America’s leading interviewers of politicians, foreign leaders, celebrities and other public figures. During a career spanning more than 60 years, he has carried out more than 30,000 interviews.
Veteran American journalist Larry King has died aged 87, his official Twitter account has confirmed.
“With deep sadness, Ora Media announces the passing of our co-founder, host and friend Larry King, who passed away this morning at the age of 87 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles,” the statement read.
King is survived by five children and several ex-wives.
During his 63-year career in broadcasting, he interviewed tens of thousands of people, from politicians and celebrities to various personalities appearing in the news cycle. Viewers appreciated him for his generous interview style, which allowed interviewees to respond without interruption and featured relevant follow-up questions, leading to organic and informative discussions.
King gained national notoriety in the United States thanks to his 25-year run on CNN’s Larry King Live, which saw him interview every US president from Richard Nixon to Donald Trump, the New York business mogul King considered as a friend long before entered politics.
He also interviewed a host of foreign executives, becoming one of the first foreign journalists to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2000.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed his condolences on behalf of the Russian president for King’s death.
“They have met on several occasions. King has interviewed Putin on several occasions. The president has always appreciated his high level of professionalism and his undisputed journalistic credibility,” Peskov told reporters.
After CNN, King founded Ora TV. The production company signed a deal with RT America to host Larry King Now.
He had several close calls with death over a 30-year span, suffering a massive heart attack in 1987, battling cancer and suffering from a stroke in March 2019 that left him in a coma for Several weeks. King was hospitalized at the end of December 2020 after testing positive for Covid-19.
