While there was no major controversy regarding the NFL’s new instant replay system in Week 1, there was one case in which a head coach obtained conflicting information as the center New York’s replay command was examining a room.
That coach was Vic Fangio from Denver. on the grounds of a Giants salvage pit.
Broncos tight end Albert Okwuegbunam escaped and Giants goaltender Logan Ryan recovered along the sideline. The replay appeared to show Ryan was already out of bounds, however, before he had possession of the ball, which would have meant the ball stayed with the Broncos.
Fangio says officials first told him he could return the Broncos’ offense to the field because the replay showed the Giants failed to recover the ball in bounds. But officials then informed him that New York’s final verdict was to let the game stand.
“They told me first – and you probably saw that they were talking to me all the time – they first told me it would be our ball,” Fangio said, via the Broncos website. “They were just figuring out where exactly to put it and the timing element of it, and then he came back and said, ‘You’re not going to like this. “The official in New York came in and said, ‘Let him rest,’ and the official overturned the first guy’s verdict on it.”
The “boss in New York” Fangio referred to is former NFL referee Walt Anderson. While other members of the officials’ board are working on replay reviews, especially when multiple games are going on at the same time, Anderson is in charge.
Anderson’s decision to let the on-field decision hold – as well as his decision to let the on-field decision stand on a crucial Dalvin Cook fumble in the Vikings’ loss to the Bengals – suggests that Anderson will s ” Deliver the call in the field unless there is clear and obvious evidence that the call was wrong. That’s what the replay standard is meant to be, although Fangio wasn’t a fan of how it was communicated to him in one particular case.
