The Denver Broncos were reportedly going wild because of a late Baltimore Ravens run on Sunday after the outcome of the game was decided.
Vic Fangio confirmed this status during his press conference on Monday.
The Broncos head coach was asked about Lamar Jackson’s run with three seconds left and the Ravens led, 23-7. His answer was, well… let him explain.
“I thought it was some kind of *** bulls,” Fangio said. “But I expected them. Thirty-seven years in the pro ball, I’ve never seen anything like it. But that was to be expected, and I expected it.”
So why was Fangio expecting it?
“. “It’s just the way they operate. Player safety is secondary there.”
No question of joking
This is a serious accusation by Fangio in a league that touts player safety as paramount. How far management prioritizes player safety is a matter for another story. But the league wants everyone to think it’s a top priority. A head coach accusing another franchise of devaluing player safety is no small feat.
So why exactly is Fangio so pissed off? The Ravens secured victory and possession in the closing seconds of Sunday’s game. They were also missing three yards to reach 100 rushing yards and one game to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers’ NFL record for 43 straight 100-yard rushing games.
Armed with football’s best quarterback, the Ravens dodged the winning lineup to chase the record they set with Jackson’s five-yard run over time. Head coach John Harbaugh spoke about the post-game decision, which he said was his own.
Harbaugh’s explanation
“100 percent my call,” Harbaugh said. “It’s one of those things that makes sense. As a head coach you need to be aware of your players and coaches and what that means to them. It’s a very, very difficult record to achieve, and it’s a long term record.
Harbaugh’s decision left Broncos players “livid”, according to a report by Mike Klis of the Denver News 9. Fangio clearly was. But Harbaugh made no apologies on Sunday. I guess we won’t hear any more excuses in the future either.
Harbaugh responds
He didn’t sound too concerned about Fangio’s comments when asked about them on Monday.
“I thought we were on good terms”, Harbaugh said, by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. “We had a good conversation before the game. But I promise you I won’t think twice about that insult. What makes sense to us isn’t necessarily so to them.”
He also responded by questioning Denver’s decision to jump into the end zone in the previous game with 10 seconds left in a game already lost, reporters told reporters. he was not aware of a 16 point game.
