A report from last weekend indicated that the return of Broncos head coach Vic Fangio for a third season is assured and it looks like the same could be said of offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.
Fangio sent Rich Scangarello after a year in the job and hired Shurmur to lead the offense last year. The unit hasn’t shown much improvement and quarterback Drew Lock remains a work in progress, but Fangio said Shurmur was a “great choice” for what he wanted the team to go.
“He did a good job mixing up our passing plays on the first few runs, both the type of runs we did and the short, middle and deep throws,” Fangio said, via Kyle Newman of the Denver Post. “I think it’s been a learning process for all of our guys. The players are learning the system and Pat is learning our players and what’s the best formula, what’s the best approach with the guys that we have. I am delighted with what Pat can bring us in the future.
The Broncos have gone with young players in several places on offense and Shurmur believes this season’s experience will be “a real bonus” when the Broncos get back to work in 2021. If that bonus doesn’t improve production , the status quo on the coaching staff cannot extend another year.
