Riley HowellThe University of North Carolina student in Charlotte, who died trying to arrest a gunman on campus, will be buried with military honors on Sunday, confirmed Wells Funeral Home at CBS News.
Howell, 21, participated in the ROTC and was hailed as a hero for trying to stop the shooter. More than 30,000 people have signed a petition to honor it properly. According to the funeral home, the ROTC made the decision to bury Howell with military honors.
Lt. Col. Chunka Smith, who heads the University's ROTC program, said he was unable to discuss funeral projects out of respect for the Howell family, but that the army and guard "will ensure that Riley Howell is duly recognized for his heroism."

Howell "is beaten against the assailant" and "kidnapped the assailant," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief, Kerr Putney. If it was not what Howell had done, he stated that the assailant "may not have been disarmed".
"Unfortunately, he gave his life in the process, but his sacrifice saved lives," Putney said.
Smith said that he is not surprised Howell gave his life for others. "I'll tell you, he's stand out," Smith said. "As a soldier, we understand what it means to make the ultimate sacrifice."
Howell's family released a statement on Wednesday in which he was described as "a big muscular guy with a huge heart". "He was the kind of person who you thought would take care of you from the moment you met him, and he always did it." He was beaming with love and the would always do, "reads the statement.
The police said Trystan Andrew Terrell, armed with a legally purchased handgun, killed two people and wounded four others at the school before the campus police disarmed him and arrested him, authorities said.
The two students who were killed were identified as Howell and Ellis Parlier, 19 years old. Drew Pescaro, 19 years old; Sean Dehart, age 20; Emily Houpt, 23 years old; and Rami Alramadhan, 20; were injured in the attack.
