Tamba Bay Lightning Defenseman Victor Hedman collided with his Swedish compatriot Carl Hagelin during Saturday night's game against the Capitals. Nine seconds into the first period, Hedman tried to get Hagelin into the boards and his face came in contact with Hagelin's helmet.

Hedman seemed to recover and skated to the ring but did not return for the rest of the party.

Jon Cooper, Tampa head coach told the media after the match Hedman "was hit hard" and would be reevaluated. He did not rule out a concussion.

Hedman, winner of the best defenseman at Norris in 2018, played the second-highest number of minutes in the team, 1594, behind Ryan McDonagh. With 12 goals and 42 assists, Hedman's 54 points put him fourth in the team (behind Kucherov, Stamkos and Point) and 10th in NHL defensemen.

The incident occurred while Hagelin had the puck in the Capitals defense zone. Hedman skated with the verification attempt and his face came into contact with Hagelin's helmet. Hagelin's change of position as he tries to prepare for the blow may explain the injury.

Although Hedman has finished the period, his story of concussions is a source of added concern.

The next match of the Lightning will be against the Senators on Monday, which will mark the beginning of a Canadian road trip with a back-to-back match against Montreal on Tuesday.

With the President's Trophy already acquired, the rest of the regular season is not as troubling for Tampa as its serial impact and long-term health.
