Keeping track of all the latest upcoming video games is an increasingly complex task, with multiple storefronts from PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more, but don’t worry, I’m here to help. . Each month, I’ll be reviewing the games to watch out for, from big triple-A headliners to indie schemers you might otherwise overlook.
December is usually a pretty quiet month when the last stragglers before Christmas come out, and that’s most the case this year, with one big exception – Cyberpunk 2077. Yes, the long-awaited (and delayed) epic of CD Projekt Red is finally coming in a few days, although that’s not all there is to it. wait this month. Immortals Fenyx Rising, Dontnod’s latest storytelling adventure, Twin Mirror, and many more, also made their home in December. On the indie front, you can expect PHOGS, the original cooperative platformer! and the lovely Alba: A Wildlife Adventure chillout experience, to name a few.
Note: Although I’ve played demos or had early access to some of the games recommended in this article, in most cases I’m just picking games that look promising and can’t guarantee the final product. Wait for reviews before buying!
That said, here are the games you should be looking for in December …
Headliners
Twin Mirror (PC, Xbox One and PS4, December 1)
Twin Mirror plays Sam Higgs, an investigative journalist with an incredible ability to recreate the details of a crime in his mind. Unlike most of Dontnod’s other recent titles, Twin Mirror will be released all at once, rather than episodically, and appears to be more “gamey” than some of their recent very story-driven releases. Whether this approach pays off for Dontnod is a mystery that remains to be resolved, but as a fan of the studio I’m happy to see something a little different. Pre-order the game here.
Immortals Fenyx Rising (PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch and Stadia, December 3)
Ubisoft’s Greek mythology-themed adventure Immortals Fenyx Rising is obviously notes from Zelda: BOTW, but hey, why not copy the best? Francesco De Meo of Wccftech found Immortals to be a strong take on the formula in his full review …
Despite a lack of innovation, Immortals Fenyx Rising is an excellent open-world game with a light and humorous tone, good fighting, tons of content, and a well-designed main quest. It’s also, in a good way, reminiscent of the 3D puzzle games of the PlayStation 2 era and GameCube. Of course, the game suffers a bit from Ubisoft’s usual open-world design bloat, but don’t let that put you off.

Call of the Sea (PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / S, December 8)
Looking for an exclusive console to play on your new Xbox Series X or S? The call of the sea may be your best bet this year. A BioShock-style first-person adventure game (albeit without a fight), Call of the Sea is set in the 1930s and stars as fearless Norah Everhart, in search of her lost husband on a mysterious tropical island. The game’s visuals are certainly rich and colorful – hopefully it delivers a mystery to match! Pre-order the game here.
Cyberpunk 2077 (PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Stadia, December 10)
And here it is, the most anticipated, debated, controversial and potentially revolutionary game of the year. Cyberpunk 2077 has suffered a number of delays, but barring last-second disasters, it looks like its December release date is going to stick. Will the game live up to the hype? That would be next to impossible, but make no mistake, the game is beautiful, the build of her character looks satisfying, and it’s pretty much a lock Night City is going to be the most complex single RPG ever made. It’s one of those games that you have to buy to join the conversation. Pre-order the game here.

Ponpu (PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch, December 2)
Do you like classic Bomberman games? Of course you do, who doesn’t? Sadly, the actual Bomberman games felt a bit soulless for a while. Enter Ponpu, who seeks to refresh the Bomberman formula with new mechanics and a sleek, hand-drawn art style. Oh, and yes, don’t worry… there is multiplayer (local or online). Per Aspera (PC, December 3)
There have been a number of strategy games over the years about colonizing Mars, but Per Aspera looks like a solid new addition to the subgenre. The thing that seems to really set Per Aspera apart is the scale, as eventually you’ll be able to turn the entire red planet into green via terraforming. The game also features more story than you might think, with a star voice cast including Troy Baker, Phil LaMarr, Laila Berzins, and more. This is Per Aspera’s Steam page.
PHOGS! (PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch and Stadia, December 3)
PHOGS! follows in the footsteps of Octodad and other games that allow multiple players to control a single character at a time. In this case, you and a friend can control either end of a two-headed dog apparently inspired by the classic Nickelodeon cartoon CatDog. Despite the original concept, PHOGS! appears to be a surprisingly full-fledged platform game with 24 levels to play. Oh, and yes, you can dress up your two-headed dog in a variety of hats. Rule out Cyberpunk 2077, we’ve got a new game of the month. This is the Steam page for PHOGS!
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure (PC & Apple Arcade, December 11)
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is the latest project from Ustwo Games, which previously developed the popular mobile puzzle games Monument Valley and Assemble With Care. It’s easily Ustwo’s most ambitious game to date, as they leave quaint puzzles behind in favor of a full 3D island to explore. Stroll through a Mediterranean paradise as a curious young Alba and organize the citizens to help the animals and keep the island pristine. The perfect sunny chill out game for what will sure be a long and difficult winter! This is the Steam page for Alba: A Wildlife Adventure.
