Video: Khabib doubles retirement and launches Eagle Fighting Championship on Fight Pass

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov held a press conference in Russia on Wednesday to kick off the Eagle Fighting Championship (EFC), his own mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion which will be broadcast on Fight Pass.

Not surprisingly, reporters were quick to grill Nurmagomedov on his future plans.

“The Eagle” withdrew from competition following his UFC 254 victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October, but the chairman of the promotion, Dana White, is confident the ledger for pound will attempt to 30-0.

Here is an excerpt from TASS journalist Igor Lazorin:

I think that [White] will offer to fight the winner McGregor-Poirier.

Khabib: What for? I stifled both. Why should I do this?

Me: For the UFC to capitalize on your revenge against Conor.

Khabib: Yes, only money. There is no sporting interest there. I smothered them both, both were champions, both abandoned me. As our saying goes: a horse runs only when the donkey wins. Donkeys don’t even participate in competitions where horses run. I have no interest in fighting against these opponents. Imagine the UFC giving you $ 100 million. This is already a problem. But there is no sporting interest there.

Nurmagomedov insists that only the blessing of his mother will allow him to come back.

McGregor will face Poirier in the UFC 257 pay-per-view (PPV) main event in January, but according to White, the fight will not be contested for the vacant title. With Tony Ferguson losing to Gaethje and Michael Chandler taking his time to make his debut, there isn’t much left to prove to Nurmagomedov at 155 pounds.

Unless something crazy happens.
