Video: PS5 remote play from PS4 lets you play next-gen games with a DualShock

A new video shows the first look at Sony’s PS5 remote play feature running on PlayStation 4.

As detailed in images shared by VGC’s Andy Robinson, the new feature – which was added in a surprise release this week – allows users to stream PS5 content to their next-gen console, allowing them to play in a room or a separate location.

As shown in the video below, the PS5 Remote Play app allows streaming up to 1080p and includes a specific PlayStation Button menu to access the control center and home screens for both consoles.

The app is also tested via PS4 Remote Play from PSVita, which confirms that PS5 games cannot be streamed to the handheld.

To connect a PS4 console to a PS5, gamers must enable the remote play feature from the new console’s system menu, then automatically discover it over Wi-Fi or manually enter a generated code.

One unique feature that the app allows is the ability for gamers to play PS5 games such as Astro’s game room with a DualShock 4 controller, which the PS5 console itself does not.

However, the software doesn’t seem to recognize the new DualSense (the next-gen controller doesn’t seem to work with the PS4 at all at launch), meaning those who use a PS4 to play PS5 games will have to do so without haptics. , adaptive triggers or the built-in microphone, effectively blocking certain content.

Even the wireless connection of the DualSense to the PS5 system itself while streaming from a separate room is not working, as it ends the PS5 remote play session.

DualShock 4 will work with PlayStation 4 games on PS5 via backward compatibility, Sony said in a recent blog post. Specialized peripherals, such as racing wheels, arcade sticks, and officially licensed flight sticks, also work with PS5 games.

Platinum and Gold wireless headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect through a USB port or audio jack, will also work on PS5, along with PS Move motion controllers and the PlayStation VR aiming controller.

Last month, Sony revamped the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile, PC, and Mac, changing its name to PS Remote Play and adding the option to connect to PS5 when it launched.

The PS5 release date is November 12 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, with the rest of the world getting the console on November 19.

The release date for PlayStation 5 accessories – including DualSense – was recently brought forward to October 30 in the US and November 12 in the UK.
