Video shows NFL’s Richard Sherman trying to break into his in-laws’ home

NFL cornerback Richard Sherman was released from jail without bail Thursday following an alleged attempt to break into his in-laws’ home in Washington state that was filmed.

King County District Court Judge Fa’amomoi Masaniai found probable cause Sherman committed criminal trespassing, malicious mischief, driving under the influence and resisting arrest. Prosecutors did not ask the judge to rule on a residential burglary allegation for which he was originally held on Wednesday.

Masaniai rejected their request to set the bond at $ 10,000, calling Sherman a “pillar of the community” and noting that it was his first arrest. The footballer did not attend the hearing.

Masaniai ordered Sherman not to have contact with his stepfather and not to use alcohol or over-the-counter drugs.

Home surveillance footage released by the Redmond Police Department showed Sherman yelling outside a house and repeatedly rushing to the closed door as people shouted inside.

A police report said the Maple Valley Police Department, about 30 miles south of Redmond, called Redmond Police to inform them that a “suicidal” was on his way to town.

Maple Valley Police said they were told Sherman had “threatened to hang himself” and “had been drinking,” according to the police report. Officers then informed Redmond Police that Sherman was also threatening to “kill a police officer.”

“Sherman tried to seize a gun from an officer before he left Maple Valley and possibly went to Redmond,” as his wife went separately to her mother’s house, Maple Valley police told the Redmond police, according to the report.

Washington State Patrol soldiers then informed Redmond Police that they had located Sherman’s vehicle. He crashed into a cement barrier on the highway and fled the scene, officials said.

Shortly after, Sherman’s wife told dispatchers he was acting “crazy around the house,” according to the police report.

His stepfather, Raymond Moss, later told officers he armed himself with a handgun and fired pepper spray at the NFL player to protect his family as Sherman attempted to smash the carries with his shoulder.

Moss told police that “Sherman’s actions made him fearful of himself and his family,” according to the police report. He “categorically” called for charges to be brought against Sherman.

Sherman’s wife, Ashley Sherman, told police he suffered from mental health issues.

She added that “when Richard has a mental health episode like this, he doesn’t remember anything the next day,” according to the police report. She had fled her home with her children after Sherman “caused a big disturbance” earlier that night, and she didn’t know how he found her at her parents’ house, she said.

Sherman was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2011 and helped them win their first Super Bowl in 2014. He played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to 2020. He is currently a free agent.

Sherman’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

“I love and support my husband,” Ashley Sherman said in a statement after Thursday’s hearing. “I am committed to helping Richard get the support and care he needs. Richard has always been a loving father and husband. And we can’t wait to see him at home with his family.
