A Tacoma, Wash., Police officer apparently drove his car into a crowd on Saturday night, sending at least one person to hospital, authorities said. The incident was captured in a video widely shared on social media.
Then the protesters gathered at the intersection where it happened, CBS Seattle affiliate KIRO-TV reported.
“I was shocked, I was shaken, I was confused, I was afraid. This officer just ran this group of people and then fled the scene,” a woman at the scene told KIRO- TV. “I want justice to be done for those who have just been injured.”
Police said officers were responding to street runners around 6:20 p.m. There was a crowd of about 100 people at the scene when they arrived. Officers were clearing the intersection of people and a police vehicle was reportedly surrounded by the crowd.
“People hit the body of the police vehicle and its windows as the officer was pulled over on the street,” Tacoma police said. “The officer, fearing for his safety, tried to back down, but was unable to do so due to the crowds.”
A video posted to Twitter showed a person under a police SUV as they drove away. Other videos posted on Twitter showed a car making donuts before the police arrived. After authorities showed up, a police vehicle appeared to enter the crowd and run over several people before leaving.
At least one person was taken to a nearby hospital. This person’s condition is unknown.
“People were playing with the cops, yelling at the cops, yelling at the cops, then the car reversed and drove at full speed through the crowd,” Cory Le, who filmed one of the crowd, told Reuters. videos.
The Tacoma Police Department turned the investigation over to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, according to KIRO-TV.
Acting Police Chief Mike Ake said in a statement he was “concerned that our department is undergoing yet another use of lethal force.”
