A Texas Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation after a video posted to social media showed a deputy pinning an 18-year-old to the ground and then arresting her mother.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation into Tuesday’s incident, which is standard protocol, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Video on Facebook shows Kaufman County MP Martin pinning the teenager, who is black, to the ground. She is on her back crying. Her mother asks the deputy to get rid of her, shows the video.
“You can stand up. You don’t have to do her like that,” the woman said, grabbing her daughter’s hand to console her.
The member says he cannot stand up because the teenager tried to kill himself.
A second assistant arrives and turns her over on her stomach to be handcuffed. The situation escalates when the deputies help the teenager to stand up and begin to lead her towards a sheriff’s vehicle.
The video shows the mother accusing MP Martin of not recording the incident and asking MPs to loosen the handcuffs. Deputy Martin is seen in the video dragging the mother to the ground and arresting her.
The Facebook video does not show what led to the mother’s arrest. The sheriff’s office said in its press release that mother Antanique Ray shot her daughter’s arm and Deputy Martin told her not to touch the teenager. Ray then “hit Deputy Martin”, according to the sheriff’s office.
Ray was taken to the county jail for assaulting an official and interfering with public functions, the sheriff’s office said. She has since been released. It is not known if she got a lawyer.
The teenager, identified by Ray as Nekia Trigg, was taken to a mental health facility for assessment, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office said the incident began when the department received “several calls about a woman’s attempted suicide.” The department released the audio of a 911 call in which a concerned woman reported the incident.
Authorities said Deputy Martin responded and found the teenager crying and walking barefoot on the sidewalk.
In the body camera video released by the Sheriff’s Office, the deputy is heard asking Trigg why she is upset. She tells him that she is fine and continues to walk. Deputy Martin asks her to talk to her but she says she doesn’t want to get involved.
The deputy is seen grabbing Trigg’s arm and telling him she has to stay, the video shows. “OK,” she said through tears. “Why are you hurting me? “
Trigg asks the Assistant twice if she can call her mother and expresses his fear that the Assistant will harm her.
“I don’t want you to hurt me,” she said, visibly upset.
In the video, Trigg denies attempting to kill herself and tells the MP she wants to go home and call her sister. Deputy Martin still holds her arm and tells Trigg he’s going to handcuff her if she keeps walking away from him.
She starts screaming and sobbing and tells the deputy he’s hurting her. Deputy Martin radioed for help and twisted Trigg’s arm behind his back in an attempt to handcuff him. They both hit the ground and the MP’s camera drops but continues to record.
Trigg is heard repeatedly telling the deputy that he’s hurting her. While on the ground, she says “I can’t breathe” more than 20 times, the video shows.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy used a top-mounting maneuver to hold the teenager to the ground to prevent her from injuring herself. The maneuver, a common technique in jiujitsu, allowed the deputy to control the teenager’s lower body “without interfering with breathing” and to avoid “injury to both parties,” the sheriff’s office said. in the press release.
As the deputy waited for help to arrive, the teenager’s family “surrounded Deputy Martin, shouting and threatening him,” authorities said.
Ray, Trigg’s mother, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday. She said at a press conference on Thursday that she was just trying to make sure her daughter was okay.
“I didn’t feel like I threatened him in any way or nature,” she said. “I made sure to be clear on why I was there.”
Ray went on to say that his “only goal” was to calm the situation down.
“So, okay, you’re not going to let her down,” she said. “Well, I’m just going to hold his hand and if I can calm her down, maybe I can calm him down.”
“In the end, all I wanted was to be able to come home with my child.”
