This old saying is true: The birds of a feather are voted together for surreal reality shows.
So when is the time to The masked singer to let pass one of his acts last night, the Snow Owls found themselves on the wing. And as for unmasking, the show’s first costume duo turned out to be country singer Clint Black and his wife, singer /Knot landing alum Lisa Hartman Black. (Read a full recap here.)
TVLine spoke to the couple, married for 29 years, about integrating their partnership into this egg on wheels. Talking about that…
TVLINE | Did you both control the movements of the egg?
CLINT BLACK | We were stumbling in the bud. [Laughs] It’s really hard because you can’t take normal measurements. And we had to move around the stage and move sideways, get into position and stuff, and sometimes when we got into position, it was like getting off a treadmill: the heart rate is high, you got almost tripped. It took some time for all of us to be sufficiently coordinated to move forward in this area. It was really difficult. And no one had ever done that before. We were the first to step in and try to get around there, so it was a learning curve for all of us.
TVLINE | Did the show approach you as a duo?
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | Yeah, they did. Clint received an email and we were in the kitchen. We started to laugh, then the laughter started to calm down, we said, “Oh, that could be really fun! First duo, it has never happened before. Wow, that could be awesome! Once we got engaged, it was full steam ahead.
CLINT BLACK | And then we weren’t laughing. [Laughs] You get that tickle, where you laugh because you think you could actually be doing it. And then once you decide to do that, it’s “Oh no, what did we do ?!” It is quite different. I don’t know if you can tell, but it’s quite unlike anything we’ve ever done. [Laughs]
TVLINE | You two have been playing for years, but obviously not like this. Even if you have so much experience, tell me about the challenges of being in masks.
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | We both, for years, as you just said, we worked. Clint visits. That’s what he does. I go out, I get nervous, I settle down. It’s not what I do, but I finally settle in, thank goodness. I film and I do television. But this is something where we were both fish out of the water. We were dressed. It was all of those elements. It was inside that egg. You have a handbrake, like on a bicycle. You have one, I have one. No baby. “It won’t go right!” No, you have to go! Don’t fall off the stage! There’s all this stuff going on. So we were just side-by-side partners in crime here. Oh my God. The first time we worked together in a situation like this, everything leveled out. We leaned on each other in a way we had never experienced before. No darling? Was I so nice to you? [Laughs]
CLINT BLACK | It was great having my partner there. We met.
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | We were holding hands in this egg a lot, trust me.
CLINT BLACK | It was difficult in a way that you cannot perceive. Just the choice of songs, all the criteria that come into play. And then once you put on the costume, that’s one thing. Once you put on the mask, sweating begins immediately. The lenses of your eyeballs fog up and you can’t see anything. You almost can’t breathe. Immediately it’s a hotbox.
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | A lot of performers, where the microphone is, it’s a screen. It is integrated into the design of the mask. So ours was the beak, the little beak thing, and there as a little screen for the mouth and eyes. So we would both tilt it so that you could see out of the mouth. But when the time for performance came, it had to be put back in place. So it spoils you. You can kind of see, and now you can’t see at all! This is why we often held hands.
TVLINE | It took a while for the judges to focus on you. I feel like we got to all the other real life country music partnerships before we got to you. Have you had any reactions to any of these other guesses?
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | Oh my God, yes. It was funny, it was flattering. Clint and I said that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, it was funny… you don’t know what to expect. You go out, you do your best. They are all so funny and sweet.
CLINT BLACK | I was confused at one point and thought, hey, we could be Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara. [Laughs]
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | You were delusional to sweat! [Laughs]
TVLINE | Tell me about “’Til the End of Time,” a song you wrote that was inspired by the show.
CLINT BLACK | [in grandiose voice] The greatest duet ever written? Do you want to know that?
LISA HARTMAN BLACK | It is long overdue. We did the show, and we said, “You know …” And I said, “Why don’t you write?” And he went, “Arrgh.” And he wrote this amazingly beautiful song – I have to brag about you – it’s so beautiful. And production and everything. It’s a creepy song. Go ahead, honey.
CLINT BLACK | It’s one of the favorite things I’ve ever done. I wrote a few duets for us, and it was difficult to start this time. What am I going to say again? But I did. I did it. We recorded it and it fell into place very quickly. I used to take more time to work on the music so I really had to do that before a bunch of other stuff that we have to come. We’re going into rehearsals for a live show, the first since the lockdown. We’re going to do it at the Ryman on December 2nd … We almost recorded one of the songs we did on the show, but it was really better to create something new. And fans have been asking when we will do another duet. So it will be December 3. We’ll do it live on December 2, and everyone can watch it from home. It’s $ 10 to stream it live. This is a first for me. If this works, I’ll start asking people to watch me cook chicken at night. [Laughs]
