Video: Yair Rodriguez at the center of the UFC main event in Mexico City, angry fans throw bottles into Octagon

Things did not go as planned last night (Saturday, September 21st, 2019) during the UFC Fight Night 159 live on ESPN + from inside the Ciudad Arena in Mexico City, Mexico. while featherweight contenders Yair Rodriguez and Jeremy Stephens met for the main showdown.

Unfortunately for all those involved in this fight, and especially for the fans, Rodriguez got an accidental look just at the start of the fight. Stephens, as hard as he was, could not get through and the action was stopped by referee Herb Dean.

"Lil Heathen" had plenty of time to recover, as Dean urged the cage doctors to wait five full minutes before making a decision. At the end of the clock, Stephens was unable to open his left eye and the fight was called.

As if that were not enough, Mexican fans started throwing garbage in the Octagon. Both fighters were rushed by security and team members and were led out of the cage when garbage turned into bottles (see below).

Here is a better angle compared to cheap seats:

You'll also find a glimpse of angry fans throwing beer and popcorn at Stephens after the fight ended:

Despite the fact that the main event was disappointed, the Mexican fan base did not seem to be looking to get degraded after Stephens was unable to continue. "Lil Heathen" is the last fighter to ever give up if he still has an ounce of fight to him, so the eyelid must be perfectly connected. This is an unfortunate end to a tempestuous featherweight battle, but it is likely that Rodriguez against Stephens will be postponed immediately (assuming that eye can open).
