Vijay Singh, 56, in the running for a record Honda Classic win

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida – Just last week Vijay Singh turned 56. Not a word about how he celebrated, but it is doubtful that any gift could be better than the one he could give on Sunday.

Singh has only 18 holes to become the oldest winner in the history of the PGA TOUR, while his 5-under 65 in the third round of the Honda Classic on Saturday placed him within easy reach.

Sam Snead currently holds the record for the oldest winner, at age 52, 10 months and 8 days when he won the Greater Greensboro Open of 1965. Only six other players have won the PGA TOUR tournaments in their fifties, the most recent being Davis Love III, who was 51 when he won the Wyndham Championship in 2015.

Singh, of course, could break Snead's record by more than three years. He understands the enormous challenge that awaits him on Sunday.

"I am physically able to do it," Singh said. "Mentally, I'll go and see how my mind works. If I do not let anything interfere, I think I can do it. "

It's been 11 years since Singh's last victory at the TOUR, the 2008 Deutsche Bank Championship, is the second of his consecutive FedExCup playoff wins that year, earning him the FedExCup title. But he has recently been a PGA Tour champion with four career victories, including three in 2018 – including the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Asked what he might be able to gain from these victories, Singh replied, "By playing the Tour des Champions, you have to do a lot of birdies. It's about making a lot of putts, a lot of birdies. I guess that makes you aggressive and you go out and you know you have to make birds.

"It's like the children of the Web coming here. They have the same feeling: they will do a ton of birds. I think all I remember is that. You must have good results on the championship circuit, just as you must succeed here. "

Just three years ago, Singh finished T-6 in the Honda Classic, shooting four or more rounds. Four months later, he was a finalist at the 2016 Quicken Loans National, finishing with a 65 final.
