Villanova landed her first five-star engagement since the 2019 recruiting round on Thursday afternoon as top 25 talent Cam Whitmore, the # 1 prospect in the state of Maryland, announced live on CBS Sports HQ that ‘he was committed to the Wildcats. Whitmore picked Villanova from a final roster that included Illinois and North Carolina.

“They treated me like family,” Whitmore said of his recent campus visit to headquarters, announcing his decision. “That was a big part: they treated everyone like family.”

Whitmore is a 6-foot-6 combo forward who had a solid summer that culminated with a great performance at Peach Jam that moved him up the rankings from recruiting from a four-star rookie to a five-star rookie. Eric Bossi of 247Sports highlighted Whitmore’s versatility in particular as an asset that could be invaluable for Villanova upon arriving on campus to assess what engagement means for the program.

“He’s someone who is able to come in and have an immediate impact. College basketball is all about versatility,” Bossi said. “He’s a natural winger, but he can also play like a small-ball quartet… there’s a lot in his game that says he could be an immediate factor.”

Whitmore is a 2022 rookie, so he won’t be arriving until next year, but he has already developed a solid relationship with Wildcats coach Jay Wright and staff. He appears to be the foundation for a recruiting class that currently ranks in the top 10 with his engagement with four stars Mark Armstrong and Brendan Hausen also in the fold.
