On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer provided more details on the upcoming changes for WWE NXT and the rationale behind some of the recent cuts. Meltzer noted that Triple H and Shawn Michaels were not involved in the selection of the names that were released on Friday.
Meltzer said, “Paul Levesque and Shawn Michaels have nothing to do with the cuts. It was directed by Vince McMahon, Bruce Prichard and John Laurinaitis. The bottom line is that NXT is going to change in some ways and they think a lot of the competition is too small and too old.
Meltzer noted that the original idea for NXT was for it to be developmental and find and develop wrestlers who can compete in the main event WrestleMania. Meltzer said: “It means they want more guys who look like Roman Reigns. The basic feeling is that they’ve lost the war… this is the sequel and this is the new direction, these are guys. younger and bigger guys.
“The general feeling is that NXT has ventured… originally it was the competition for Ring Of Honor. Then it became the competition for AEW. When Ring Of Honor started showing life and the indie scene started showing life, it was supposed to be them who were getting that fan base. Then it became the competition for AEW. What happened has happened and now they want it to go back to what it was and so there are cuts that have been made and it’s the guys that have been cut and there are going to be changes. Power play is a strange word [but] there are differing opinions on the fight among the key people and they are fighting for Vince’s ear and that’s the ear Vince has this week. Next week he might listen to someone else’s ear and go in a completely different direction, but that’s what happened this week.
Meltzer added that the idea is to go back to when Curtis Axel was in NXT and a note has been sent out describing what is wanted for the new NXT. Meltzer said, “The wording is’ more dwarves, nobody in their thirties, they want people who can be box office attractions and main characters. “
What’s interesting is that they are pushing to keep Adam Cole, someone McMahon usually wouldn’t want to keep due to his size. The idea is that if he signs, he will move on to the main roster. Cole is one of the exceptions, but generally McMahon wants bigger wrestlers and main roster writers have been asked to come up with ideas for him.
It is not yet known if Cole has decided to stay with WWE or if he will start talks with AEW.
