The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, hailed the heroic actions of a Malian immigrant after climbing along a four-story building to save a child hanging on the edge of the balcony.

"I congratulate Mamoudou Gassama for his courage in saving the life of a child," said Hidalgo, adding that the city would support Gassama's dream of permanently settling in France.

Hidalgo spoke to Gassama personally on the phone to thank him after Spiderman's climbing style video went viral.

By the time the fire department arrived, the 4-year-old boy had been saved.

Christophe Castaner, a French minister and former government spokesman, wrote on Twitter that he admired Gassama for saving lives without thinking of his own safety.

Gassama, 22, told the daily Le Parisien that he was walking near the building on Saturday night (26/05) when he saw the crowd. Then he rushed to act.

"I did it because it was a child," cited by Le Parisien. "I went up, thank God I could save him." He then said, when he entered the room he started shaking and seemed to faint.

A preliminary investigation by French police revealed that the boy's parents were not home when the incident occurred. According to the French news agency AFP, the boy's father is questioned by the police for leaving his son unattended.

Gassama was invited to meet French President Emmanuel Macrondi of the Elysée on Monday (28/5).
