Virgin river doesn’t fire any punches in Season 2, even though the premiere begins with the show’s biggest emotional punch to date.
Fresh out of her dramatic (and somewhat rushed) departure from Virgin River, Mel begins Episode 1 where she feels most comfortable: Los Angeles – especially at Mark’s grave, where she pours what’s left. of his broken heart. “The idea of my home doesn’t really exist anymore for me, because you were my home. I’ll never stop loving you, ”she tells him, a devastating feeling that she follows with that punch we talked about earlier:“ Kiss our little girl for me. (Oof! It hurts just to type.)
Sadly, the contract Mel signed with Doc didn’t include a love triangle clause, so she’s forced to return to the romantic crime scene to complete her year at the clinic. It’s not Doc she meets when she arrives, however, but rather a speechless (and rightly irritated) Jack, whose phone calls apparently weren’t returned during Mel’s little retreat.
To make matters worse, he’s there with Charmaine, who doesn’t to pretend that she wouldn’t like to bury Mel under the adorable cabin she now calls home. Not only does she begin the episode by disparaging Mel to Jack, but when they see her at the clinic, Charmaine sniffs, “What the hell she do here? ”Rude!
At this point, Mel has accepted that she will just have to suffer for the rest of her year in the clinic, avoiding Jack and his crazy ex-girlfriend as much as possible. The hiccup in this shot, of course, is that Charmaine’s pregnancy is at high risk, so it’s in her best interests to stay in Virgin River, where she can be very close to her sympathetic neighborhood nurse practitioner. (For the record, we support the universe’s insistence on bringing Jack and Mel together like magnets, but did Charmaine have to be trained for the ride?)
When the former Virgin River couple finally get the chance to exchange words, the conversation is likely uncomfortable. Jack tells Mel he didn’t think she was the type of person who ran away when the going got tough, and despite his lingering worries about their relationship, Jack insists he’s right about them. topic. “You’ll see,” he told her.
Mel begins to wonder if she ruined everything by coming to Virgin River, but Doc insists her arrival is what helped Jack achieve what he really wants out of life. Doc is considerably more supportive of their relationship than Preacher, who tells Jack that he should forget about Mel and focus on Charmaine – and looks oddly angry when Jack says he’s in love with her.
Then comes the final twist of the premiere, an unexpected turn of events that sets the tone for a much darker season to come: Mel gets a late-night visit to the clinic, but it’s neither Doc nor Jack. (Hell, even Charmaine would be a welcome sight!) No, it’s a hoppy junkie with a knife asking Mel to hand over the goods. Honestly, this is possibly the craziest cliffhanger since that time, Mel caught Lilly breastfeeding what she thought was someone else’s baby.
Other premiere events to discuss …
* Despite being super practical behind closed doors, Hope insists that she and Doc keep their rekindled romance a secret, lest they usurp the throne of Mel and Jack as the subject of hottest gossip in town. She also doesn’t want to rush things, which makes sense given the speed of life in Virgin River. (Seriously, when do we think Charmaine is going to start dating? Season 8?) Anyway, Hope’s brilliant plan immediately explodes in her face when Muriel asks her permission to start dating Doc… and she says yes.
* Remember the end of Season 1 with Preacher finding blood on the floor at Paige’s? Well, she’s apparently doing very well, referring to this incident as “the night Christopher cut off her hand.” It’s a sketchy cover-up, like Paige’s – sorry, Michelle – story of getting out of town to treat his son’s injury. But Preacher still wants to help, thus inviting her to Christopher to move in with him. Unfortunately, she doesn’t even have time to celebrate before returning home to find her abusive ex-husband waiting for her in the yard.
* And then there’s Brady. Jack and Preacher’s rebellious boyfriend tells Jack that he got another job offer, but he is willing to turn it down if Jack agrees to let him run the bar. Jack doesn’t just laugh at the idea of giving Brady that kind of responsibility, but he throws a “You’ve got to grow up and live together” for good measure. (If you’re worried about it coming back to bite Jack later this season, you’re not wrong.)
