At the end of last year, we announced the creation of a high-speed rail station for Walt Disney World. Virgin Trains (formerly Brightline) has now confirmed its intention to open the station at about the same time that its Orlando International Airport (OLS) station is full. The expansion would connect Orlando to Tampa and Miami.
According to Patrick Goddard, present in Virgin Trains:
"We expect it to be done and to develop Disney. It is quite conceivable that this could happen in the delivery of the Orlando [airport] station."
Goddard adds that completion on time is at the mercy of permits and funding, but that construction is expected to begin shortly and take between 30 and 36 months.
Goddard said Virgin had "excellent relations with Walt Disney World" and that they were "big supporters" of the project. The Walt Disney World resort "would integrate into its transportation system, hotels and theme parks".
The 20-mile Walt Disney World Expansion will also include a stopover at SunRail Meadow Wood Tube Station. The regional commuter rail system is currently unrelated to the MCO.
The founder of the Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson, said that with the number of European passengers heading to Orlando from Orlando, and that Virgin Voyages connecting to Miami next year, the going-to-go Returning to Orlando is important for the company.
"Connecting Orlando to Miami is a dream. It will transform the lives of many people. "
