Virginia Tech takes Williams to Texas A & M

Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams returns home to become Texas A & M's next head coach.

Virginia Tech Sports Director Whit Babcock confirmed the decision in a statement.

"Coach Williams has had a very positive impact on the culture of our basketball program at Virginia Tech," said Babcock. "We appreciate all that Buzz and his staff have done for our students and our program, and we wish Buzz, Corey and their family the best of success upon their return to their home state of Texas."

Williams was considered the big favorite to replace Billy Kennedy since the end of last season and was essentially the only candidate for the Aggies once they broke up with Kennedy last month. Virginia Tech's season ended with a loss to Duke at Sweet 16 last Friday, and Williams and A & M have signed a deal in recent days.

Williams, who spent two seasons as assistant coach of Texas A & M from 2004 to 2006, has been Virginia Tech's head coach for the past five seasons. He led the Hokies to three appearances in NCAA tournaments. Before taking up his position in Blacksburg, Williams had led Marquette at five NCAA tournaments in six seasons, including three Sweet 16s and one Elite Eight in 2013.

Kennedy was released after eight seasons during which he played 151-116 with two appearances in NCAA tournaments.
