Authorities in Virginia announced on Saturday that the body of Emily Lu, 72, had been found 50 days after her disappearance – and that the victim’s tenant had been charged with “brutal and vicious murder.”
Brian George Sayrs Jr., 25, of Woodbridge, has been charged with second degree murder and concealment of bodies, the Fairfax County Police Department said.
Sayrs had already been identified by investigators as a person of interest. Lu was reported missing on June 4 when she failed to show up for her shift at an elderly care facility.
Lu’s remains were discovered in woods near a roundabout in Dudley and Laurel Crest in Lorton after Sayrs telephoned detectives on Friday evening and finally provided them with information leading them to the area, the chief said of Fairfax County Police Major Crime Bureau Ed O’Carroll at a press conference. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted or hoped for,” O’Carroll told the journalists, refusing to reveal a motive. . “It took 50 days for justice to come, but justice has arrived.”

Police Chief Kevin Davis said, “Now it is time for the criminal justice system to take action and hold Brian Sayrs responsible for the brutal and vicious murder of 72-year-old Emily Lu.”
Authorities declined to say how Lu was killed or if a murder weapon was found.
Investigators previously released surveillance video showing the last time Lu was seen alive – around 7:52 p.m. on June 3 at the Aldi store, 1329 Gordon Plaza in Woodbridge, Prince William County. She was reported missing the next day after Lu failed to show up for her shift at home in Annandale, where she had worked for at least five years.
“At 72, her efforts in the community were that she was taking care of others,” said O’Carroll. “So it’s so unfortunate that this is the 13th homicide in Fairfax County in 2021. But we will seek justice.”
Sayrs was renting a room in Lu’s house in Lorton at the time of his disappearance.
O’Carroll said the evidence shows she was likely killed at home on the day she went missing. Early on, detectives suspected foul play, as Lu’s car was found parked in its driveway. Thousands of hours of investigative steps, including multiple ground and aerial searches of the area, had been carried out before the case broke up on Friday.
