MINNEAPOLIS – Two of the best defensive teams in the country were up for the first round of the national championship game. As we head towards halftime, Virginia leads Texas Tech 32-29.

Both teams started the match with a combined total of 10 to 10, but the Cavaliers relaxed and extended their lead to 10 points. Texas Tech responded with a race all by itself, propelled by a timely three-point shot and some excellent games from Brandone Francis and Kyler Edwards on the bench. The Red Raiders are only 3 for 12 on two up to 20 minutes, but 5 out of 12 on 3 points and 8 for 10 on the free throw line.

Before heading into the locker room, Virginia coach Tony Bennett told CBS Sports' Tracy Wolfson that his team had things to "tighten up" in defense for the second half.

"Sometimes it took us a while to close our doors and they hurt us with screen-ball stuff," Bennett said. "Both teams play so hard that we have to tighten things up, everyone is fighting, possessions matter."
