GLOUCESTER, Va. – A woman from Virginia has died hours after receiving the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, her family said, but state officials say her death and the vaccine may not be linked.
The woman has been identified as Drene Keyes, 58. She had received the first dose of the virus, waited 15 minutes after the show and was leaving.
“A coworker said she was trying to get in the car and said ‘something is wrong’,” daughter Lisa Jones said.
Keyes, who suffered from diabetes, sleep apnea, and was obese, began to have difficulty breathing and vomiting. She was rushed to hospital and died.
The Virginia Department of Health said in a statement Friday that preliminary results indicate that the cause of death for Gloucester’s woman was not anaphylaxis, indicating a serious, potentially fatal allergic reaction. The state medical examiner is investigating the incident and officials say it may take several weeks for more information to become available.
The VDH says the CDC is now collecting additional information after the death has been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
“I want to offer my condolences to the family. Any loss is horrendous,” State Health Commissioner Norman Oliver said.
