Schell Games makes a sequel to its hit virtual reality game I expect you to die, and it should be released later this year.
Along with the announcement, the studio mentioned that the original game generated $ 6 million in revenue across all VR platforms, which might explain how it can afford to make a sequel. It is not yet known which VR platforms the next game will arrive on, but it will at least arrive on Steam, which indicates support for Vive, Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
The original was more or less a spy-themed VR escape room, and the second seems like it’s going to be more or less the same, which isn’t necessarily undesirable in a world where theaters are. actual escape is not really accessible during a pandemic.
So far, most of the early-era VR games that people admit didn’t have a follow-up, and that’s doubly true for those made by independent studios. While Lonely echo has a sequel in the works, the studio behind it was bought by Facebook and is now part of Oculus Studios. Very hot was super fun when it comes to VR, but its sequel does not yet support VR gaming. I could go on, making a list of VR games that haven’t had sequels like Arizona Sun, Boneworks, and Defeat Saber (not that he needs one), but you get the picture.
Hopefully this sequel announcement is a testament to the fact that VR is emerging from a crisis. The year 2020 has been rather successful, with the release of Half-life: Alyx and the Oculus Quest 2, but a successful year doesn’t necessarily indicate a trend. As with everything, content is king and VR will have to continue to have lethal versions to gain market share. Obviously, not everything is sure I expect you to die 2shoulders, but if it can replicate the success of the original, it could be a sign that the VR market is on its way back to life.
