Team Kelly: Desz (Grade: B +) defeated Joseph Soul (Grade: B) on “If you don’t know me now” – Joseph stolen by Gwen | After their first pass, Kelly warned that she had heard high-pitched parts. Ruh-roh. Councilor Leon Bridges recommended Joseph sell the quieter moments he might have avoided rather than fight to keep up with Desz. “I don’t want to be left in the dust,” he admitted. On stage, Joseph looked nervous but sounded good. Desz, on the other hand, looked like she was born and raised in the spotlight and looked amazing. As the song progressed, Joseph stepped up his playing, but so did Desz – to heights he just couldn’t reach.
Team Blake: Jim Ranger (Grade: A) defeated John Sullivan (Grade: B +) on “Good as You” | In rehearsal, Blake had no sooner assigned the blow of Kane Brown to the members of his team than he introduced their advisor … Kane Brown. No pressure, guys. Going through the number, the sounds of the two guys were really cool, but Jim’s tendency to explode seemed likely to outshine him. Likewise, Blake warned him not to sing but to the audience, which prompted Jim to admit that yes, he was suffering from a condition known as over-arousal. When the spotlight fell on J&J, John’s natural appeal served him well, but Jim’s richer, sharper voice stood out. As, way outside. As the show progressed, Julia often seemed to me to be screaming a bit, while John, doing the same, was more melodic. “I don’t even understand how real you are,” Gwen told John when they were done. Her lineup was unbeatable, despite the many and varied ways in which Julia wowed coaches.
And given the brief lag in a quick cut, Tanner Gomes beat Skylar Alyvia Mayton to stay on Team Kelly, and Chloe Hogan beating Lain Roy to keep her spot on Team Gwen (which means, argh, Gwen dropped a real potential winner).
