Void Linux, a continuous release distro that we have covered before that is known for its XBPS package manager and interesting design decisions such as using the Runit boot system and supporting the Musl C library. , recently worked on improving support for its POWER CPU architecture.

Daniel Kolesa, who is the main maintainer of the POWER port of Void Linux, spoke to FOSDEM 2021 earlier this month about their enhancements for the benefit of IBM POWER / OpenPOWER hardware.

Void Linux for POWER worked on 32-bit little endian support to complement existing POWER 64-bit little endian support as well as to already support 32-bit and 64-bit POWER in big endian mode. Void Linux also offers fixes for LibreSSL to provide faster encryption performance on POWER, make Google Chromium work on POWER in their archives, support Electron applications on POWER and also get good support. AMD Radeon graphics driver load running on POWER.

Void Linux on POWER was originally introduced on PPC64LE on Raptor Talos II Lite hardware and over the years has seen a lot of work. There have also been OpenJDK Java improvements, improvements in handling multiple toolchains, etc. For those with a POWER system like the wonderful free hardware POWER9 from Raptor Computing Systems, the latest Void Linux seems like a decent competitor if they want a good continuous output POWER distribution.
