Volvo is recalling 460,769 vintage cars around the world due to faulty airbags which could be fatal in an accident.
The problem occurs when the airbag is activated due to an accident. Fragments of the inflator inside the airbag can, in some cases, fly off and in the worst case strike you, potentially resulting in serious injury or death, the company told US safety regulators.
Volvo is aware of a rupture incident that resulted in death as a result of the problem, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The affected vehicles are old Volvo models. They include the S80 2001-2006 and S60 2001-2009. The vehicles were produced between May 2000 and March 2009.
More than half of the vehicles – 259 3838 – were sold in the United States
Volvo said the problem arises over time if the airbag inflator propellants are subjected to high humidity levels and frequent inflator temperatures. Tablets can begin to break down and form dust particles, which increases the pressure and “burn rate” of devices. These factors could cause the inflator to rupture and the projection of metal fragments on the occupants.
“In the event of an accident where the driver’s airbag is activated, fragments of the inflator inside the airbag can, in some cases, fly off and in the worst case strike you, potentially causing serious injury or death. dead “, according to Volvo.
