The actors who played Von Trapp’s children in The Sound of Music have revealed what it was like to shoot with the late Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews.

Debbie Turner, 64, who was seven when she played Marta in the film, Angela Cartwright, 68, who played Brigitta at 13, and Nicholas Hammond, 70, who was 14 when he performed Friedrich appeared on This Morning today.

They paid tribute to Christopher, who died at 91 on Friday and best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 musical, praising the star’s “ focus and commitment ” on set.

Nicholas, from New South Wales, revealed how the star will intentionally distance himself from the kids on set, so that they instantly gravitate onscreen to the ‘fun and happy’ Andrews, who played Maria Von Trapp in the movie.

“He showed me what it’s like to be an actor, with his focus and his commitment,” he said. It was true that he was more serious on set, certainly than Julie who was charming and fun, full of light and joy for all of us.

“ But Christopher came over there to do a job and knew that as children we shouldn’t be as comfortable with him as our dad, as Maria. So it was a very calculated move.

‘She was extremely friendly and warm and taught us jokes and songs and Christopher kept his distance from us and I think it was absolutely the right choice and I had immense admiration for him. ”

But Christopher had a softer side, with Debbie from Minnesota recalling a famous scene in the movie where he secretly made faces at her to make her laugh.

She said, “We were doing the scene after we got back from picking berries and he was facing me and saying ‘Marta, where were you really?’

“ The camera was on his back and I just remember him making faces at me making me laugh … it was just funny enough to remember that he had a sweet side to him. ”

Julie, now 85, was 27 during the filming of the film, before the 1964 film Mary Poppins was released in the US, and Angela recalled how the star taught young actors words on songs from the comedy iconic musical on set.

“Mary Poppins wasn’t out yet, so no one in America knew who she was,” Nicolas said. “Most people in Los Angeles didn’t know who she was.

‘She was 27 and the studio was on the verge of bankruptcy and it was all on the shoulders of a 27 year old girl and if you think about what she did in that movie it’s an amazing accomplishment. ”

Angela added: “ Oh she taught us Mary Poppins songs absolutely! I can still say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards. She was lovely and a great energy and we had a great time on the movie.

Christopher had been quoted as saying he regretted his choice to star in the film, but Angela says his take on the film ‘changed’ as she got older and his serious demeanor brought an ‘advantage’ to the role.

“ I think that changed with age and he realized how much his career had progressed, much faster than he could have, ” she said.

“ I think he regretted saying that a bit but I think he brought a real advantage to the part that didn’t make him so awkward and I loved working with Chris, a very talented guy very sad to lose it ”.
